In India, places like the railway station, airport, metro stations, malls, offices, etc. have security checking booths for women. I created one just for men.
I have made use of technology, household objects and found objects to incorporate both tangible and intangible spaces which aid surveillance. I have used a mesh and black cloth to create the frisking booth, a private space within the public space. The household objects chosen are the ones that require labor, which often goes invisibilized. The booth embodies a constructed normal within which plays out a hypothetical scenario.
This booth was placed at the entrance of an exhibition. All people who identify as men were supposed to go through it to visit the exhibit. When a man enters the booth, they are asked to play the game. Whatever task the game gives them, they have to complete. It includes tasks such as, Fold the clothes, Stitch a button, Wash the utensils, Separate lentils, etc. Once they have completed this, they are given another task by the guard which is to send their location home and tell their parents/spouse what time they will be back home.
