I picked up various elements including Bindis, Bangles, Mehendi and Gajra, and placed them in different public spaces. I deliberately tried to find places that made me feel uncomfortable due to the female to male ratio and the male gaze. I went to Chuna Mandi in Paharganj, a market which mostly sells raw materials and industrial goods. In the entire market, I could only spot a few females other than me. The areas I picked included local chai shops, a public washroom with nothing but a drain and no door, deserted roundabout in the evening, a construction site, a raw material shop and an auto-rickshaw.
The idea of this exercise was to intervene in the Masculine public space with feminine elements. It is an experiment to attempt a shift in how these spaces are seen and accessed.
I later converted it into a zine for an exhibition, images of which are uploaded here.
